That $20 self-watering pot I bought 3 years ago is still going strong while my cheap ones cracked after one season

I got it from a local hardware store after killing two tomato plants from overwatering, and honestly it saved my balcony garden since I travel for work sometimes and my neighbor forgets to water, has anyone else had luck with those or is it just me?

Are you talking about the ones with the little water reservoir at the bottom and the cotton wick thing? I bought one for my mom's orchids and she keeps complaining it's too wet but I think she's just not used to letting the soil dry out between fills. What material is yours made of that's holding up so well, because I keep seeing those cheap plastic ones at the dollar store and wondering if they're worth grabbing?
