Plastic pots vs terracotta pots - my cherry tomatoes changed sides

I planted two cherry tomato plants on my south-facing balcony in May, one in a plastic pot and one in terracotta, both the same size. By August, the plastic pot plant was huge with tons of fruit, while the terracotta one was half the size and droopy. I think the terracotta dried out way too fast in the afternoon sun, but my friend swears terracotta is better for root health. Has anyone else seen a big difference between pot materials for balcony veggies?

Terracotta is like that friend who seems great on paper but actually sucks in practice. You want the earthy, breathable vibe but then you're watering twice a day and your plant still looks like it's dying of thirst on a south facing balcony. I've noticed this pattern carries over to other things in life, like people who swear by leather boots for hiking but then you're slipping all over wet rocks while everyone in sneakers is fine. The thing is, terracotta does have better airflow for roots, but that doesn't matter if the plant can't get enough water to live through the afternoon. Plastic pots are ugly and cheap but they work, just like a lot of stuff that looks bad but actually gets the job done. Your friend is probably watering their terracotta pot three times a day and still has to accept that some designs just don't fit every situation.

Oh my god yes, I totally get this. My friend Sarah got all excited about terracotta for her succulents last summer and she was so proud of how cute they looked on her windowsill. Then within like a week she was complaining that her echeveria was all shriveled up and she was watering it every single morning and it still looked sad. She finally switched to a plain white plastic pot and that thing is thriving now, no joke. It's ugly but it works, just like how she kept trying to make those expensive 'vegan leather' sneakers work for hiking and they just fell apart after two trips. Sometimes the cheap option is the better option.
