My tomato cage gave out in the wind and flattened all four plants overnight
I'm so mad at myself right now. I had four Roma plants going in two big pots on my third floor balcony in Chicago, and they were doing great until last Tuesday night. We got a gusty storm and my cheap wire cages just folded over like paper clips, and the plants ended up bent flat against the railing with a bunch of stems snapped. I went out there at 6am in my pajamas trying to tie things up with old shoelaces and it was a mess. Two of the plants I don't think are coming back, the main stem is cracked right above the soil. I thought the cages were fine because they felt stiff when I set them up in May, but once the plants got heavy with fruit they had no chance. Now I'm trying to figure out if I should stake the survivors or just start over with something sturdier before the season ends. Has anyone figured out a cheap way to anchor cages so they don't tip on a balcony?
