My old plastic window box finally gave out after 8 years, dumped all my basil on the concrete.

That's a real bummer, but at least the basil had a good run. For the next one, look for window boxes made of fiberglass or metal. They cost a bit more but they don't get brittle and crack in the sun like plastic always does. You can sometimes find them used if you keep an eye on local listings. Just make sure whatever you get has decent drainage holes in the bottom.

Honestly, it's just a window box. Go grab another cheap plastic one from the garden center, it'll last another eight years easy. People act like you need some fancy forever material for a thing that holds dirt. The basil is fine, just scoop it up and put it in a new box. This isn't a big deal.

Did you see that article about people using those resin composite planters that look like stone but don't crack up? I read it in some gardening blog a few weeks back... they said the plastic ones always fail eventually because of the UV rays breaking down the polymers. It's not just about getting a cheap one or an expensive one, it's about what material actually holds up. But honestly, if the cheap ones last eight years like you said, that's still a pretty good deal for a few bucks... I've spent more on worse things.
