My $30 self-watering planter split open from the bottom last August during a heatwave

Came home to find soil and water all over my balcony floor and my tomato plant laying sideways, so now I just use regular pots with saucers and water them by hand twice a day, has anyone else had those plastic pots crack in direct sun?

Those thin plastic pots are basically disposable in full sun, the UV breaks them down fast. Try switching to thick terracotta or fabric grow bags if you want something that lasts more than a season. Heavy ceramic pots with drainage holes and a saucer underneath have held up fine for me through several summers of direct sun.

Ngl, you're totally right about the plastic pots. I switched to fabric grow bags a couple years ago and they've held up way better than I expected, even in the scorching summer heat. Honestly, the terracotta ones are solid too, just gotta remember to water more often.
