I thought my balcony tomatoes needed full sun all day
For months I kept moving my pots to chase the light, but the leaves kept getting pale and crispy. My neighbor in apartment 3B saw me struggling and said, 'You know, my plants get about 5 hours of direct sun and they're fine.' I moved mine to a spot that only gets morning sun, and the new growth is way greener and healthier. How much direct sun do your balcony veggies really need?

Oh man, my buddy did the same thing with peppers. He had them in a brutal all-day spot and they just fried. He moved them to get sun from like 10 to 2, and it was a total game changer. The plants finally looked happy and he got a decent harvest.

That "sun from 10 to 2" thing is interesting, but I've had the opposite happen. My peppers last year got leggy and weak with only four hours. I put them back out for a full southern exposure and they finally bushed out and fruited like crazy. Maybe it depends more on your actual climate and how hot it gets?
