I used to toss cardboard egg cartons in the recycling without a second thought. Then my neighbor Rosa showed me her setup on her balcony in Sacramento, and I honestly laughed at first. She pokes a tiny drain hole in each cup, fills them with seed mix, and sets them on a sunny sill. I tried it with my kale on March 3rd, and by March 15th I had 22 sprouts versus the 9 I got from my old plastic trays. The cardboard holds moisture way better and the roots don't get all tangled when I move them outside. Anyone else using egg cartons, or do you have a better cheap starter pot?
