I finally got tomatoes on my 4th floor balcony after 3 years of nothing but leaves
I grow on a north facing balcony in Chicago and always got big green plants with zero fruit. This July I moved my two Better Boy plants to the railing corner where they get about 5 hours of direct sun, and within 3 weeks I had 11 tomatoes set. Turns out my old spot only got maybe 2 hours and that was the whole problem. Anyone else had luck with cherry types in lower light, or should I stick with what worked this year?

Moving them to the railing corner probably did a lot of the heavy lifting, but 5 hours of sun is on the low side for a beefsteak like Better Boy. Those usually want 6 to 8 hours of full sun, so if the corner only gets 5, you got lucky with a good year. Cherry types are way more forgiving in part shade and still set fruit, so trying one cherry in that north spot would be a fair test. Keep the Better Boys where they are since they clearly work, and don't change up both plants at once.
