Appreciation post: a pepper plant in a 3 gallon pot can still give you 14 peppers
I always assumed my balcony was too small to get a real harvest, so I kept pots tiny and expected tiny results. Last spring I moved one jalapeno seedling into a 3 gallon fabric pot instead of the little 8 inch one it came in, mostly because I ran out of the small ones. I counted them out of curiosity this week and got 14 peppers off that single plant, plus a handful of smaller ones still green. The other jalapeno in the 8 inch pot gave me 3. Same seed packet, same sun on the railing, same watering can, so the pot size was the only real difference here. I read on a university extension page (I think it was a Texas A&M one about container gardening) that small pots dry out and starve the roots, and that finally made sense seeing it side by side. I'm on a north facing balcony in Chicago so I thought light was my whole problem, but it turns out the roots were. Next spring I'm moving my cherry tomato into the biggest pot I can fit out there and seeing what happens. Has anyone here had luck with a 5 gallon pot for tomatoes, or does that get too heavy for a wood railing planter?
