Tried heat shrink on a cannon plug last month and the pins pulled clean out

I was rushing a connector repair on a King radio install in Tulsa and figured heat shrink alone would hold the strain relief instead of doing the proper backshell work. Two flights later the pins walked right out of the plug and the radio cut out on approach, which is a fun thing to explain to a pilot. Now I want to know if anyone here has a trick for getting a backshell tight in a spot where you can barely get two fingers in.
