Took 6 months to realize my cheap crimper was the problem, not my technique

I spent forever fighting with pin crimps on D-sub connectors, getting intermittent opens that drove me nuts during ground tests. Finally borrowed a name brand crimper from a buddy at the hangar in Tulsa and every single crimp came out clean on the first shot. The difference was the die alignment, my old one let the pin sit slightly crooked so the barrel never closed evenly. It cost me a full weekend redoing a harness that should have taken one afternoon. Now I tell anyone starting out to borrow or rent a good crimper before buying cheap. Has anyone else found a specific tool that quietly wrecked their work for months before they figured it out?
