My grandpa had a similar rule about not using two different brands of batteries in the same flashlight, @richard_ramirez. He said it was like mixing whiskey brands in one glass, you just end up with a weird taste and nothing runs right. I see this kind of wisdom pop up a lot in woodworking too, like not over-sanding between coats of finish. Sometimes we add steps because we think more effort equals better results, but it usually just wastes time and materials.

Well I'll be. That old timer might have saved you a lot of time and money. I had a similar talk with a guy at my last job who told me to stop wrapping every connection with electrical tape like it was going to a fancy dance. He showed me how just a good mechanical connection and a little dab of dielectric grease could outlast all the tape in the world. Sometimes the old ways really do work best.
