Warning: stop lowering your car with just springs and calling it a coilover setup
I've watched three guys in my local crew slap lowering springs on stock dampers this year and every single one of them blew a strut within 5k miles. The springs drop the ride height about 1.5 inches but the factory shocks weren't valved for that shorter travel, so they bottom out on every speed bump and pothole. My buddy's Civic in Sacramento started clunking after 4 months and he blamed the springs when it was really the dead damper underneath. You're not saving money by skipping the matched shocks, you're just paying for the same job twice plus an alignment each time. If you're gonna drop the car, get a real matched spring and damper set or go full coilover, anything else is just burning cash. What's the worst blown strut story you guys have from a cheap drop?
My cousin did this exact thing to his GTI and the strut actually punched through the mount. Took out the top hat and part of the fender liner with it. He was on the highway when it let go too, said the car started wandering and he pulled over to find the wheel sitting weird. Cost him way more than the springs he saved on. Four months is about right too, they just die slow and take everything else with them.
