Ran my coilovers at full stiff for 8 months before a guy at a track day in Sonoma asked why my tires were cupping
I had my coilovers cranked to full stiff since I put them on last summer because I figured stiffer equals better handling. At a track day at Sonoma two weekends ago, a guy pitted next to me asked why my front tires looked cupped all to hell. I told him I ran the dampers all the way stiff and he just laughed and said I was basically driving on pogo sticks and bouncing the contact patch off the pavement. He helped me back the fronts down 6 clicks and the rears down 4 and my lap times dropped almost 2 seconds on the same tires. Eight months of fighting understeer and it was my own settings the whole time. Anyone else set their stuff too stiff out of the gate and have to walk it back?
Man, I heard a guy on a podcast say the same thing, that most people set their dampers way too stiff thinking it's faster. He said the shock can't do its job if it's cranked, so the tire just skips across the bumps instead of staying planted. Your pogo stick comment from that guy at Sonoma is dead on. I ran mine near full stiff for a whole season and wondered why the car felt nervous over curbs at Thunderhill. Backed it off and it finally started hooking up.
