Just learned a cold air intake can actually cost you horsepower if you skip the tune
I was reading through a build thread on a WRX forum about a guy in Phoenix who dyno'd his car after bolting on a 3 inch intake with no tune and actually lost 8 wheel horsepower compared to stock. The computer was pulling fuel because the mass air flow sensor was reading way more air than the engine could use, so it ran pig rich and bogged down. I always figured intake equals free power, but apparently the ECU needs a reflash to take advantage of it. Anyone here run an intake without a tune and actually feel a difference, or was it all in your head like I'm starting to think?
Ugh, this reminds me of when I threw a K&N drop-in on my old Civic and swore it felt faster, probably just because it got louder. Sounds like that WRX guy actually did the math and proved our butts are terrible lie detectors.
