Hot take: headers vs no headers on a daily driver, is the power gain worth the noise?

I drove down to Richmond last weekend to check out a buddy's shop build, and I swear every other car on the street had straight pipes or headers dumping right under the cab. I get that you might pick up 10-15 horsepower on a V8, but after sitting in traffic for 20 minutes my ears were ringing. On the flip side, my neighbor’s old Trans Am has long tubes and sounds mean as hell at idle. So what’s the real trade-off for someone who commutes every day - do you still go with headers for the sound, or keep the stock manifolds and save yourself the headache? Has anyone here actually dyno'd both setups on a daily and regretted it?

I read a write-up in a car magazine a few years back where a guy tested both setups on an old Nova, and the headers only picked up 8 horsepower at the wheels. That little difference is never worth the drone on the highway, especially if you're doing any kind of commuting. A buddy of mine put shorty headers on his Silverado and said the only thing he noticed was a louder cab and a slight dip in low-end torque. For a daily driver, I'd rather keep the stock manifolds and spend that money on a good set of mufflers if you want a better note without the ringing ears.

Yeah that Silverado story hits close to home... @robinson.quinn I did the same thing on my old F150 hoping for a little more growl and ended up with a headache instead. Guess I paid extra to make my truck louder and slower, real smart move on my part.
