Bought a cheap cold air intake kit off eBay for $45 and it melted after 3 days

The plastic tube literally warped and collapsed from the engine heat, and the filter was basically a rag. Spent another $120 on a name brand one and it's been fine for over a year now. Anyone else fall for those bargain bin intake kits?

The real issue nobody talks about is the filter oil those cheap kits come with. Had a buddy that ran one of those $45 specials and the oil was so thin it basically turned to steam, coated his MAF sensor in a greasy film, and his car ran like crap for two weeks until he cleaned it all out with brake cleaner. Meanwhile the name brand stuff uses a thicker oil that actually stays put. Manufacturers like K&N have that figured out for a reason.

Not sure I'd go that far. I've run those cheap Amazon kits on a couple beaters and never had any MAF issues. Might just be bad luck on your buddy's part. You really think a little thin oil is gonna wreck your whole setup that fast? Seems like a stretch to me.
