Switched from eyeballing freezer temps to using a $12 thermometer
Used to think my frost buildup was just bad luck until I finally checked the temp and found it was running at 15 degrees instead of zero. That little change stopped my calls about frost issues in that model cold. Anyone else skip the basics for way too long?

Is 15 degrees really that far off from zero for a freezer? Ice cream gets a bit soft but most stuff stays frozen fine as long as it's not actively thawing.

My grandmother kept her freezer at 15 degrees for years and never had anything go bad, but she also insisted leftovers could stay on the counter for a week if they smelled fine. A little softness in ice cream never hurt anybody, I figure.
