Picked a used condenser unit over a new one for a rental house fix

I had to choose between a $1,200 used condenser unit from a guy on Craigslist or a new $2,800 one from the supply house. I went with the used one to save the landlord some cash. It worked fine for 3 months, then the compressor started making a weird noise. Has anyone else tried refurbished AC parts and regretted it?

Grabbed a used AC unit off a local HVAC guy's truck a couple years ago for a flip house, still running strong with zero issues after a good cleaning and a new capacitor.
