Master plumber told me to use dope on flare fittings
Old timer at the supply house swore I'd get leaks without pipe dope on brass flare fittings. I've done over 50 gas lines using just the flare nut and never had a problem. Should I change my method or is he just stuck in his ways?

Nah man, your old timer is WRONG on this one. I've done HUNDREDS of gas flare fittings and never used dope on them, not once. The whole point of a flare is that it's a metal-to-metal seal, and dope can actually make it worse by letting the nut over-torque and crack the flare. Plus if you ever have to take it apart, that dope crusts up and makes a MESS. Stick with what works for you, I've seen way more leaks from guys who overtighten with dope than from dry flares.

Yeah, you actually got me thinking, I always put dope on but maybe I’ve been doing it wrong.
