Found a trick for cleaning burnt-on grease off oven elements without damaging them

I was working on a range in Cleveland last Tuesday, the element was caked with years of grease. Sprayed degreaser on it and it started smoking... bad idea. Let it cool, then scraped off what I could with a plastic putty knife. Wiped it with a damp microfiber cloth after. Element worked fine after reconnecting. Anyone else got a go-to method for this that's safe?

Oh man this brings back a memory. My buddy Dave tried the self-clean cycle on his oven one time to burn off all the gunk and the element actually melted a little bit and started arcing like crazy. He had to kill the breaker and then he was just standing there in the dark with smoke everywhere. So yeah definitely don't recommend the heat approach either. What ended up working was he took the element out carefully and soaked it in a bucket of hot water with dish soap for like an hour then scrubbed it with a scotch brite pad that way it was totally submerged and no electrical risk. Worked way better than any spray he tried.
