A job in a 1920s apartment building made me stop trusting every 'standard' wiring diagram I see.

After that 1920s job, I always double-check with my own voltage tester first.

Come on, trusting your own tester over the prints is how mistakes happen. The diagrams are usually right, and second-guessing them just adds time and confusion. Maybe that one old building was the weird exception, not the rule.

... and that's exactly it, Evaperez knows what she's talking about. I've had plenty of old buildings where the prints showed a three-wire setup but the actual box had a mess of cloth-wire from the 1920s that didn't match anything. Trusting the diagram first would have fried my meter for sure. You gotta respect the age of the place, not the paper it came on.
