Vent: My coworker Jenna argued that AI art is 'just as creative' as human art and I can't agree

We were talking about that DALL-E 3 update last week, and she said the algorithm 'has feelings' because it picks up on emotional cues. I pushed back that it's just pattern matching, not actual emotion, and she got defensive. Has anyone else had this argument without it turning into a fight?

Did you ever feel like you were just defending the human side of it, or was it more about the tech itself? I used to be totally on your side until I saw some AI art that actually made me feel something, and now I'm kind of stuck in the middle.

You said you're "stuck in the middle" after seeing AI art that actually made you feel something, and I get that. I think that's the tricky part about this whole debate. The thing is, the emotion you felt is real, but it comes from you, not the AI. Like when you look at a cloud and see a face, the cloud isn't trying to make you see a face. You're just good at finding patterns. Same with AI art. It can look creative because we're good at filling in the gaps. But the machine didn't feel anything while making it, it just copied what sad or happy pictures usually look like. That doesn't make your feeling fake, but it does mean the creativity is all on your end.
