Showerthought: my brother in law says AI art will never be real art, and honestly I think he has a point I didn't want to hear
My brother in law came by last weekend to help me split some firewood and we got into it about those AI image generators. He's a painter, does murals around Springfield, and he said something that stuck with me: a machine can copy a million paintings but it never once had to decide what to leave out. I pushed back hard at first because I use these tools for quick mockups and they're honestly handy. But he asked me how many hours I've put into learning to read a tree before I cut it, and whether a model trained on every tree photo ever taken would know that. I didn't have a good answer. Curious if anyone here has changed their mind on this after talking to someone who actually makes things by hand.
