The day I realized I was painting furniture backwards for 4 years

So I've been repainting old dressers and chairs as a side gig in Columbus for a while now. Last month a client handed me a $30 can of proper primer and asked why I never used it. I genuinely thought primer was just a scam, so I'd been sanding everything down to the bone, slapping on two layers of cheap chalk paint, and calling it a day. This time I followed the directions, used the primer, and the finish came out so smooth it looked like a different piece of furniture. I spent almost 4 years making my job twice as hard and wondering why my paint chipped so fast. Has anyone else had one of those 'wait, that's what that's for' moments with basic supplies? What did you figure out way later than you should have?

Man, primer is definitely not a scam, it's the whole foundation.
