The 87 color swatches I tried before realizing the answer was in the garbage

I was repainting my kitchen cabinets in Columbus and kept failing to match the weird pale green that came with the house, so I hit the hardware store 6 times for test pots. Then my buddy pointed out the old landlord left a half-used can of 'Moth Wing' by Valspar in the bin out back, and it matched perfectly after 2 coats. Has anyone else sworn off color matching and just resorted to digging through someone's trash for the original paint?

Buddy of mine spent a whole weekend trying to match the weird beige in his rental. He had like a dozen paint chips taped to the wall and still couldn't get it right. Finally gave up and looked under the sink in the laundry room, sure enough there was an old can of "Greige" from Sherwin Williams. He painted one patch and it was dead on. Now he swears by checking basements and garages before ever touching a color fan deck. Trash can be a lifesaver if you're patient enough to dig.
