That landlord special turned my opinion around on texture paint

Rented a place with lumpy beige walls for 2 years, hated every inch. Then I saw the bare drywall underneath after a leak, all cracked and wavy, and suddenly understood why someone slapped that stuff on thick.

Rented a place in Austin that had the same thing, popcorn texture on every ceiling and walls that looked like oatmeal. Hated it until I tried to patch a small hole and realized the drywall underneath was so messed up it wasn't even worth fixing. Ended up just matching the texture with a spray can from Home Depot, took like an hour and you honestly could not tell where the patch was. That stuff hides a lot of sins, and honestly after seeing the alternative, I get it now too. It's ugly as hell but it's practical, and sometimes that's what you need in a rental.
