TIL the British Museum's Rosetta Stone has a chip on it from a 19th century visitor
I went last month and noticed that big chunk missing on the corner, right where everyone snaps their photos. The guide said some guy literally knocked it off during a dispute back in the 1800s, and they never fixed it. Do museums leave damage like that on purpose to show history is messy, or is repair just too risky?

Funny enough, I almost added to that chip last month. I was leaning in for the perfect shot and my bag swung right into the glass. Security gave me a look that could melt steel. So if you see a tiny new scratch on the display case, that was me, and I'm deeply sorry. Maybe they leave the damage so people like me feel extra clumsy by comparison.
