Realized I was skipping the first 3 chapters of every novel for a decade

I got called out by a friend in Portland who saw my bookmark at page 50 and asked why I always start mid-book, and it hit me that I'd been doing it since college because I thought prologues were just author filler, so has anyone else built a weird reading habit that makes no sense once you actually say it out loud?

Three years ago I realized I only read the last hundred pages of any mystery novel, just to find out who did it, then went back and read the middle if I cared enough. My buddy in Denver caught me doing it with a Tana French book and laughed his ass off, said I was basically reading spoilers as a hobby. It started because I got burned by a slow burn thriller in 2019, spent six hours waiting for a payoff that never came, so I figured why waste the time. Now I flip to the end, check the killer, then decide if the journey is worth it. Honestly it changed how I pick books, I only finish maybe half of them now, but the ones I do finish I actually enjoy. I guess the prologue thing is just the other side of the same coin, we both just hate wasting hours on stuff that doesn't matter.
