My uncle's 20 year old advice about reruns finally made sense

My uncle used to say that watching a show twice is the only honest way to judge it, because the first time you're just following the plot like a sucker. I brushed him off for years, figured he was just old and cheap. Then last month I rewatched The Wire after a decade and caught a whole side story about the docks that I completely missed the first time around. It hit me that a good movie or series is less about the ending and more about the little things that only show up when you already know who does what. He said the same goes for news articles, you have to read them twice to see what the writer left out. So now I'm curious, has anyone else gone back to something they hated or skipped and suddenly got it, or is my uncle just a weirdo with too much free time?
