Hot take: A brutal review of my favorite novel made me appreciate the bad sequel more

So I read this literary fiction book, 'The Salt Path' kind of vibe, and I loved it. Then I picked up its sequel which everyone trashed online. One commenter said the sequel 'missed the whole point of the first one' and listed 3 specific reasons. At first I got defensive, but then I reread the first book and honestly? They were right. The sequel turned the quiet survival story into a road trip adventure. I still like both, but now I see them as two totally different genres pretending to be a series. My question: when a sequel gets roasted, do you usually side with the critics or find your own weird appreciation for it? Curious if anyone else has flipped their opinion after reading a harsh take.

Season 2 of The Leftovers ruined me too, but I still rewatch it every year.
