Tried hand quilting after 20 years of machine work, completely different skill
I learned to sew on my grandma's old Singer back in 2003 and always did machine quilting. Last month I picked up a vintage quilt top at a thrift shop in Boulder for $12 and decided to hand quilt it just to see. Honestly, the first hour was rough, my fingers hurt and my stitches were all over the place. But after about 3 evenings, something clicked. The rhythm is slower but you can feel the fabric way better, catch puckers before they set, and fix mistakes on the spot. Machine quilting gives you speed but hand quilting gives you control over tricky spots like corners and curves. Has anyone else switched methods late in the game and found one way easier for certain projects?

Oh man, this hits home hard! I switched to hand quilting after 15 years of machine work and my first attempt looked like a drunk spider got loose on the fabric. The finger pain is real, I kept stabbing myself with the needle and cursing at my grandma's ghost for making it look so easy. But you're right about that rhythm, once you find it, it's almost like meditation. I actually keep a hand quilting project on my coffee table now and work on it during TV shows, it's way easier to fix a mistake without having to rip out a whole machine seam.
