I've been painting minis wrong for 10 years, a 7 year old showed me why

I was at a FLGS in Tulsa last month, doing my usual layering and drybrushing routine on a goblin, when this kid leans over and says 'why are you painting the shadows first?' and honestly I froze because I had no answer beyond 'that's how I learned' from some 2014 YouTube tutorial. Turns out, building up from midtones to highlights and leaving the base coat as the dark value means way less touching up, and my last 40 minis that I'd been blaming on cheap plastic were actually just my backwards process. Anyone else run into a basic technique flip that made you rework your whole paint station approach?

Took me way too long to figure out underpainting for the same reason. Watched one guy on youtube back in the day and just never questioned it. Now everything pops way faster.
