That handwritten recipe card from the 1930s had a surprise ingredient list
Picked up a mason jar full of recipe cards at an estate sale in Wichita last Sunday, tried the molasses cookie one, and my kitchen smelled like burnt rubber for 3 hours. Turns out the card called for 'butter substitute' which was actually lard, but the handwriting was so faded I read it as 'butter substitute' twice before checking under a UV light. Anyone else found old cooking notes with cryptic shorthand that ruined your batch?

Used to roll my eyes at people who swore by old family recipes, figured modern measurements were always better. But after decoding that card with a UV light and realizing the lard was actually the secret to those cookies being so tender, I get why people chase those notes around. What other weird old kitchen codes have you all cracked?
