That $18 'heirloom' tomato from the farmers market was a total dud

Bought 3 of them after the vendor swore they were the sweetest he'd ever grown, mushy inside and tasted like water. Anyone else get burned by expensive produce that's all hype?

Ugh, that is such a rip off. It's like people forget that farmers markets are just retail stores with better lighting and a guilt trip. I've learned the hard way that the "heirloom" label is just code for "pays the rent on this booth." The real trick is to find the one vendor who's selling the ugly, misshapen stuff at the back of their table, that's the actual flavor, the pretty ones are for the Instagram crowd. You basically paid for the story and the sticker, not the tomato.

Isn't it funny how we'll pay extra just to feel fancy, then eat it sad and disappointed?
