My compost bin hit 150 degrees last week during the hot part of breaking down. Jenny426, you talked about the smell, but did you know heat can cut down on bad smells after a while? I saw that when it gets that hot, pests like flies stay away because they can't handle the heat. This also means the stuff breaks down quicker, so you get good soil without too much work. It's neat to watch how waste turns into something useful right in your backyard.

Doesn't the smell bother you sometimes? It's great for the yard, but that part is tough.

Embrace the smell from your compost. It's a natural part of breaking down waste and enriching the soil. After a while, you might even start to like it.
