People get so hung up on these what ifs. Aviation was a global race, someone else would have put it together pretty quick. Not like the whole idea would have just vanished forever. We'd probably just name a different airport after somebody.

But doesn't that ignore the TIMING and context? If the Wright brothers hadn't cracked it when they did, how much longer would it have taken? And what would that delay have meant for world events like WWI? Sure, the idea was out there, but the specific breakthroughs MATTER. We might have had a totally different path for technology, not just a different name on some airport.
