Walking past the new salon downtown with tablet check-ins got me thinking about paper appointment books from my early days.

Remember those huge appointment books with the colored pens? My handwriting was so bad clients probably thought their slot was "3 pm smudge." Honestly the new system is probably safer... at least my clumsy fingers can't accidentally delete a whole week of appointments with one coffee spill.

Back at my aunt's salon in 2008, we had this paper book that weighed about five pounds. It was like carrying around a brick, and if you dropped it, appointments went flying everywhere. The fun part was decoding my boss's handwriting, which looked like chicken scratch after her third coffee. I get why tablets seem better, but honestly, I've seen those things freeze up right when someone's trying to check in. So maybe both ways have their own special kind of chaos. At least with paper, you could blame the pen. With tech, it's always some update you didn't do.

My old boss had a paper book where the binding was held together with packing tape and hope. My handwriting was so bad I once wrote "haircut" and it looked like "hayride." A client showed up very confused. At least with a tablet you can blame autocorrect for your mistakes, lmao.
