Rant: I had to pick between a cheap torch upgrade or saving for a new glory hole

Last month my old minor burner started acting up, and I had about $500 saved. I could either get a new mid-range hand torch now or keep saving for a bigger glory hole setup for my studio. I went with the hand torch, a GTT Bobcat, thinking it would fix my small work issues. It helped for a bit, but now I'm stuck because I still can't handle larger pieces without that bigger reheat station. Has anyone else faced a choice like this and wished they waited?

Ugh, that's the worst kind of short-term fix trap.

Right? It feels good for like five minutes and then you're in a deeper hole. I fell for that last year with a quick diet fix, just to gain back more weight. Why do we keep doing it when we know it never works out? It's like our brains shut off and hope takes over. I'm trying to learn to spot that trap now before I jump in.

Start by looking at what we actually get out of these quick fixes. Its not just hope thats making us do dumb stuff. There's usually a real need underneath, like wanting to feel in control or getting that rush of progress. But the problem is these fixes are built on a lie. They promise results without the work, and your brain buys it because it sounds easier than the long grind. The real trap is confusing activity with progress. If you can learn to pause and ask yourself "Am I solving this or just soothing it?" you'll catch it half the time at least.
