My neighbor swore his new smartwatch was useless, but I think he just didn't give it a real shot.

He told me 'it just counts steps, my phone does that' after wearing it for a single day. Has anyone else seen someone dismiss a gadget way too fast?

Oh, that's a shame. A smartwatch needs at least a week to learn your habits. One day really isn't enough.

Wait, a whole week? That's crazy to me. If I buy something new, I should know if it works for me pretty fast. A week of wearing a watch that feels useless is a long time. I'm not going to force myself to use a gadget hoping it gets better later. It either fits into my life now or it doesn't.

A week seems generous to me. Some gadgets just don't click right away. I get what @campbell.cora is saying about learning habits, but if the main feature feels redundant on day one, that's a fair first impression. It takes real effort to find a use for something that doesn't solve a new problem.
