My daughter begs to help with refinishing, but my husband won't allow it
She keeps asking to join me while I work on an old desk. I feel it's a good chance to show her a useful craft. He says the sanding dust and finish fumes are too risky for a kid. We really disagree on this. How do you all deal with family wanting to learn the trade?

My uncle tried to teach me wood staining when I was 14. He didn't think about ventilation, and I ended up with a headache for two days. Now I always crack a window and use a mask, even for small jobs. Kids can learn, but you gotta be smart about the setup, lol.

My buddy Alex stained a desk in his closed garage last year. Got so lightheaded he almost fell off the ladder. His wife found him sitting on the floor looking pale. They had to air the place out for a full day before he could finish.
