Finally got the nerve to try a French polish after a demo at the state fair
Honestly, I was at the woodworking demo tent in Springfield for like an hour just watching this older guy work. He used a 2-inch rubber and a tiny bit of shellac, and the way he moved his hand made it look so simple. Has anyone else tried it on a real piece and not just a practice board?

Watched those demos too and they make it seem like brain surgery. It's just wiping shellac on wood. My first try was on an old stool and yeah it got gummy, but I just wiped it off with some alcohol and tried again. People act like you ruin the piece forever if you mess up. It's a finish, not a tattoo.

Yeah, that demo confidence is a real trap. I tried it on a small table I'd made, and it was a mess. My rubber kept sticking, and I got streaks everywhere. It looks easy when they do it, but the rhythm is everything. I had to strip it back to bare wood and start over.
