Back in my day, varnish was patient. Now it dries before you can blink.

I miss the old oil-based varnishes that let you take your time. The new water-based stuff dries so fast, I end up with streaks and lap marks every time. Has anyone found a way to slow it down without ruining the finish?

Try a foam brush for smoother coats.

Thinning it out with just a little water helps a lot, like a capful per cup. You gotta keep a wet edge, so work on a smaller area at a time, maybe just one table leg before moving on. I used to get those ugly brush marks on door frames until I started doing this. It flows out better and gives you those extra few minutes to fix your strokes.

Heard working in a cooler room helps a bunch.
