Overheard a client at a coffee shop say they'd never pay more than $50 for a logo
I mean, they were talking about how 'anyone with a computer can do it.' It made me realize I need to get way better at explaining the actual work behind my design process. How do you guys handle clients who don't see the value in skilled work?

Honestly that used to happen to me all the time. Started making a simple one-page PDF that shows my steps, like the research, sketches, and revisions. When someone says it's just pushing buttons, I explain how a good logo needs to work everywhere from a website to a tiny app icon. It turns the talk from price into what they're actually buying.

Wait, do you think it's a BAD sign when I show clients my "process" and it's literally just a screenshot of me staring at a blank screen for three hours before drawing a stick figure on a napkin? No but seriously, your PDF idea is GENIUS because mine would just be a series of frantic Google searches like "how to make a circle in Illustrator" and a photo of me crying over font kerning. I actually tried explaining the tiny app icon thing to a client once by showing them my own logo at 16 pixels and it looked like a sad potato with a hat. They finally got it when I compared it to wearing a tuxedo that only looks good from ten feet away but falls apart up close.
