A client in Phoenix offered me a flat $500 for a project that took me 80 hours.

He said 'that's the going rate for this kind of work' when I asked about the timeline, and it made me realize I need to start quoting by project value, not just hourly, so how do you guys price your work to avoid that trap?

Ouch, that's less than minimum wage. @the_brooke, how do you actually figure out what the result is worth to a client though? I mean, I get the idea but putting a real number on it feels tricky.

Yeah that's rough, and @kaimiller's right, putting a real number on the value is the hardest part lol.

Yeah, that's brutal, sorry that happened. I got burned like that once and now I always give a project quote based on what the result is worth to the client, not my hours. I figure out the scope, decide on a fair price for me that also works for them, and stick to it. If they want more stuff later, that's a new quote and more money.
