Why I skip the pre-heat for small brass castings
I think we overdo the pre-heat step for small brass castings... most guys in my shop swear by it. They say it stops cracks and helps the metal flow better. But from my work, I've found skipping it saves a lot of time and fuel. For example, a few months back, I poured fifty pieces without pre-heating the molds, and every one turned out perfect. I get that it's not the standard way, but for quick jobs, it's been reliable. Maybe we should question some old habits if they don't always add value.

What kind of molds are you using for those small pieces? I only skip the pre-heat on really simple sand casts, anything else and I've had issues.

I've skipped pre-heat on brass too, works like a charm. Cut my setup time in half and the pieces come out fine.

Isn't that risking weak joints down the line? Pre-heat helps the brass heat evenly, so you don't get cracks or stress points. I've seen pieces come out fine at first, but then they fail after a few uses. It might save time now, but it could cost more later if something breaks. Why cut corners on something that affects the whole piece's strength? Have you tested those pieces under real stress?
