My old furnace in Dayton started making a sound like gravel in a can last Tuesday.

I was pouring a batch of gray iron for some machine bases when this awful grinding noise kicked up from the pit. Shut it down right away and found a big chunk of refractory had broken off the arch and was just bouncing around in the fan. Had to cool the whole thing for a day and a half to patch it. Anyone know a good supplier for high-alumina firebrick around here that won't take a week to ship?

Saw a post on the Dayton Foundry Group page last month about refractory issues. Guy over at Buckeye Castings said his whole arch came down after a thermal shock. He ended up getting a pallet of K26 brick from a place called Tri-State Supply in Cincinnati. They had it on a truck the next morning. Might be worth giving them a call, their stuff held up for his cupola reline.

I always figured K26 was overkill for a cupola, but hearing Buckeye's arch held up makes a strong case.
