Bought a cheap infrared thermometer that cost me a pour
Grabbed a $40 one from a truck stop years back to check mold temps. Thing read 200 degrees low on a big gray iron job. Metal set up too fast in the runners, had to cut and remelt about 800 pounds. Boss was not happy. What's a good brand that actually holds up near the cupola?

@thomas83 you are absolutely right. That kind of mistake sticks with you way longer than any good decision ever does. I remember I once did the same thing years ago and still cringe when I think about it.
