That bit about the depression cake really hits home. My buddy's grandma used to make this "poor man's gravy" with just flour, water, bacon grease, and black pepper. He tried to get the recipe from his mom once, and she just shrugged and said you make it when there's nothing else. The exact method seems to be gone.

Ever try to make something like that and it just never tastes right? Those old ways of cooking with nothing really do get lost.
