My cousin asked me why we never make Great-Grandma's vinegar pie anymore
I had to admit it's because the recipe card just says 'a good splash' of vinegar and 'enough' sugar, which is useless. Has anyone actually tried to pin down a real recipe for something like that?

Oh man, I feel that. My family's secret chili recipe is just "cook it until it looks right." I've made some truly terrible pots trying to figure that one out. Good luck with the pie detective work.

Right? "Cook it until it looks right" is the worst kind of instruction. I tried to make my mom's gravy that way once and ended up with something closer to tar. I feel for @eric93 too, because "add enough milk" is just as bad. It's like our grandparents were allergic to actual measurements. I guess we just have to keep messing it up until we have our own terrible pots to pass down someday.

My grandma's pie crust recipe just says "add enough milk" which is zero help.
